Sodwana Bay

Situated in a marine reserve on the east coast of Maputoland, Sodwana Bay is a scuba diving paradise in the heart of the wilds of South Africa. A mere 4 hours drive from Durban and is home to a recently discovered colony of Coelacanths. These creatures, once thought to be extinct, make this a very special scuba diving destination indeed

Sodwana Bay is also situated in the heart of "Big 5" country, with a number of privately owned game lodges in the area, as well as the famous Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, making this an ideal destination for the whole family.

With colourful reefs, a wealth of marine life, sharks, dolphins and whales, and peaceful surroundings, Sodwana Bay is a must as part of your South African scuba diving experience.

Climate & Water Temperatures
Situated in subtropical waters, Sodwana Bay is an all year round dive destination with water temperatures reaching a warm 30'C in summer and seldom going below 20'C in winter. 3mm wetsuits or lycra suits are adequate in summer and 5mm suits in winter.

Dive Spots
The reefs at Sodwana are named after their distance from the launch site, starting at "2 Mile" and going up to "9 Mile". Over 1200 species of fish have been identified at Sodwana Bay and you will find the Raggedtooth Shark here in December and January.

Anton's Reef
Average depth 15 m.
Pinnacles
Average depth 10 m.
Gullies, Caves & Overhangs
Average depth 12m
Four Buoy
Average depth 11 m.
Five Mile Reef
8 kms north of Jesser Point and 1 km offshore.
Maximum depth is 21 m.
Seven Mile Reef
11 kms north of Jesser Point at 800m offshore. Average depth is 18 m.

There are a number of accommodation infrastructures within the Sodwana Bay area catering for all - from campsites to luxury houses.

Other activities that can be enjoyed are:
Horse riding, quad biking, walking trails, microlite flips, trips to Lake Sibiya for sundowners, snorkeling trips to Mabibi, turtle tours from Nov to March and much more.
